Veggies on the Cheap: Claremont Farmer’s Market

By Bridgette Eichelberger ‘14

Every Sunday at eight in the morning, the unremarkable pavement on Second Street between Indian Hill and Yale sprouts Easy-Up awnings and plastic folding tables. Flatbeds full of plants and trucks full of fresh fruit are polished and made ready for sale.

The Farmers' Market in full swing

The Claremont Farmer’s Market is a short walk or a quick bike ride away from Harvey Mudd- even though there are no bike racks, there are plenty of street signs that encourage creative use of bike locks.

True to its name, the Farmer’s Market sports abundant fresh produce. Boxes of strawberries and cartons of dates compete with a plethora of squash and dozens of varieties of root vegetables from Weiser Farms.

“New World” Sounds at Scripps

By Bridgette Eichelberger ’14

Claremont Concert Orchestra performs at Garrison Theatre

On Saturday and Sunday, October 23rd and 24th, the melodies of Gershwin and Dvorak wafted from Garrison Theater. The Claremont Concert Orchestra presented “Sounds from the New World,” symphony pieces inspired by America’s innovative take on music.

The orchestra first performed an arrangement of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Portrait, which combines popular music of the 1930s and a classic symphony format. Like traditional classical music, Porgy and Bess has an intricate level of composition and a dramatic conclusion. However, Porgy and Bess also reflects popular music of the time. The focus of the piece shifted to the brass instruments several times, causing the arrangement to sound more like jazz or blues.
